The story
A military prison transformed into a place of national memory.
The buildings occupied by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society were once part of the British military prison complex at the Garrison. Their reuse as a museum gives the site two stories at once: the military landscape itself and the much broader story of Barbados interpreted inside.
The Museum has operated here since the 1930s and holds extensive collections covering the island's natural, social, cultural and military history.
Its Military Gallery traces armed forces in Barbados from the 17th century into the modern era, including the West India Regiment, the World Wars and the later Barbados Defence Force.
