The story
Defending Carlisle Bay before the Garrison grew around the Savannah.
Charles Fort is one of the surviving coastal fortifications connected with the defence of Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay. The site dates to the 17th century, before the Garrison became the major imperial military headquarters seen in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
Its position at Needham's Point gave the fort a direct view across the approaches to Carlisle Bay. Coastal forts formed part of a larger defensive network intended to protect the harbour, shipping and the town beyond it.
Today the remains of Charles Fort stand within the grounds of the Hilton Barbados Resort, linking the modern waterfront with a much older layer of Barbados' military history.
