A maritime marker on the edge of the Garrison.
Needham's Point Lighthouse dates to 1855 and stands at the southern end of Carlisle Bay. It is generally identified as the second-oldest surviving lighthouse in Barbados.
Its location mattered because Carlisle Bay was one of the island's important maritime approaches. The lighthouse helped guide vessels toward the bay, adding navigation to a landscape already shaped by forts, batteries and military control of the coastline.
The lighthouse is unusual among Barbados' historic lights because it used a stationary rather than rotating light. The surviving tower stands within the grounds of the Hilton Barbados Resort and is no longer operational.
