The story
The human side of the Garrison.
The Barbados Military Cemetery lies at Needham's Point, close to the southern edge of the Garrison landscape. Although the burial ground is associated with the military presence established here from the late 18th century, the earliest clearly identifiable surviving grave is reported from 1822.
The headstones and memorials record servicemen, their families and people connected with military life in Barbados. The cemetery retains a continuing commemorative role connected with Commonwealth armed forces and the Barbados Defence Force.
Walking through the cemetery changes the scale of the Garrison story. Forts, barracks and parade grounds describe institutions; the cemetery records individual lives, service, illness, loss and memory.
