The place
The Garrison does not end at the Savannah.
Drill Hall Beach lies close to Needham's Point and the wider Garrison landscape. Its location beside historic military sites makes it part of the same physical story as the forts, cemetery, barracks and Savannah farther inland.
The beach is known for waves breaking over a shallow reef and has long been associated with surfing and windsurfing. It offers a very different way of experiencing the Garrison: not through a monument or building, but through the coastline that the military complex was built to protect.
From here, the relationship between the Garrison and Carlisle Bay becomes easier to understand. Charles Fort, Needham's Point, St. Ann's Fort and the military landscape all formed part of a wider defensive environment connected to the sea.
